Air and Space Icons
The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum holds an important place in the minds of scientists and enthusiasts alike, along with the imaginations of children across the country. These are icons for their various exhibits, which are meant to have a friendly, yet dignified feel.
I began the ideation process by creating word webs” to sift through all of the ideas in my head, as well as create new ones. Research played a heavy role in this stage. I looked at the Smithsonian website for design inspiration. The icons needed to be recognizable, so creativity in imagery also had to have a familiar quality. They also needed to fit with the current style of the museum.

After the webs came sketches. I went through numerous options until finding those that struck the balance of simple, recognizable, and interesting.
The last step was bringing the icons to the computer. I also went through several variations at this stage until landing on the final set. The circles surrounding each icon help to solidify them as a group, and their weight on the page is meant to be quite similar.
