Sloth Icons

The goal of these icons was to simplify a sloth to its most basic form using the gestalt principles.

I wanted my sloths to feel friendly and playful, while still having that lazy energy synonymous with their name.

After looking at countless pictures of sloths, I began with a few realistic sketches. These helped me identify the recognizable aspects of the sloth, which, in turn, led to how I would simplify them.

Thumbnails on paper came next. Once I settled on 5 that felt silly, fun, and lazy, I translated them to digital icons on the computer using Illustrator.

I scanned my sketches in and traced over them with the pen tool. I refined and edited them as needed until they were clean, simple, and (of course) sloth-like.

Once I began adding type, my classmates weighed in. After they critiqued, I used their notes to make changes that I later implemented.

Lastly came the T-shirt designs. I went through several thumbnails before landing on designs that had the energy and feeling that screamed "sloth." Because sloths have become beloved by teenagers, I wanted my T-shirts to look like something a teen would wear.
